Moldova describes steps taken to meet Millennium Development Goals
Seven years after signing the Declaration, the Republic of Moldova reports on the progress made in achieving the Millennium Development Goals. The draft National Report “Millennium Development Goals: new challenges – new tasks” was published on the website www.pnd.md.
According to Adrian Cojocaru, communication coordinator of the Participation Council’s Secretariat, the second National Report contains revised targets and indicators as well as new methodological aspects of the assessment and monitoring processes.
The Government of Moldova invites nongovernmental organizations, representatives of academic circles, the private sector, the partners for development and the mass media to public debates on the draft Report. The commentaries and proposals can be sent by 05.11.07 to sugestii@mec.gov.md. Afterwards, the final version of the Report will be presented to the Government for approval.
Moldova signed the “United Nations Millennium Declaration: human development as a primary goal” in 2000 alongside another 191 states.
The signatory countries pledged to meet the following goals by the year 2015: to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger, to achieve universal primary education, to promote gender equality and empower women, to reduce child mortality, to improve maternal health, to combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases, to ensure environmental sustainability, and to develop a global partnership for development.
The “United Nations Millennium Declaration: human development as a primary goal” contains fundamental objectives that were included in the Economic Growth and Poverty Reduction Strategy.
