Moldova defeated in first match of Euro 2016 qualifying rounds

The national football team of Moldova suffered a 0-2 defeat to Montenegro away in the first match of the Euro 2016 qualifying rounds, IPN reports.

Former Juventus striker Mirko Vucinic opened the score in the last minute of the first half. Moldova’s hopes to secure at least a draw were ruined in the 73rd minute, when Zarko Tomasevic doubled the advantage. Montenegro took thus revenge for the 2-5 defeat to Moldova sustained last year.

“Montenegro played better. They wanted the victory more. We made too many mistakes, regretfully. Both of the goals were scored following our mistakes,” Moldova coach Ion Cara has told a news conference.

“We badly wanted to score a victory after a series of failures. We showed our character. Vucinic is a real captain. He pulled the team after him,” said Montenegro coach Branko Brnovic.

The other two matches of group H ended as follows: Russia - Liechtenstein 4-0; Austria – Sweden 1-1. On October 9, Liechtenstein meets Montego, Moldova – Austria, while Sweden – Russia.
