The National Currency Day is observed on November 29. On this occasion, the National Bank of Moldova stages a series of financial education events. One of them will be held at the Theoretical Lyceum “Aristotel” in the form of a debate entitled “Banknote and coin versus digital currency”, IPN reports.
According to the central bank, the lyceum students will discuss important subjects, such as the circulation of banknotes and coins and the use of digital currency. In this regard, the young people informed themselves beforehand in a meeting that involved experts of the NBM. The students realized that digital currency and virtual currency (crytocurrency) are not the same thing and that only digital currency is regulated by law, while virtual currency is not issued or guaranteed by the central bank. Consequently, virtual currency poses many risks of insecurity and financial losses.
Today’s debate will center on the circulation of the national currency, the prospects of using banknotes and coins versus digital currency and their role in the economy. The event will be broadcast live starting with 3pm, on the NBM’s communication platforms.
Another event is a series of visits to the exhibition hall of the central bank intended for students interested in the financial-banking sector. The visitors will familiarize themselves with the collection of commemorative and jubilee coins issued by the central bank and will be able to see a presentation about the history of the Moldovan leu and the national currency’s security features. Those interested can register for a next visit through edufin@bnm.md
The Moldovan leu was put into circulation on November 29, 1993. The National Bank of Moldova has the exclusive right to issue banknotes and coins as legal tender on Moldova’s territory.
