Moldova cannot risk making bellicose statements on Transnistrian dispute, analyst

Moldova is not ready to make bellicose statements directly against Tiraspol and indirectly against Moscow, believes political analyst Ion Tabirta, who stated for IPN that now Moldova should strengthen its diplomatic powers.

The analyst was asked to state his opinion on the statement concerning the situation in Transnistria adopted by Parliament on June 21. The statement was supported by most of the MPs, but some of the lawmakers challenged it, saying it is sterile. “In general, I think that the statement looks as it should. We must show prudence, calmness and determination. Solutions can be identified only by diplomatic ways. We cannot get into a fight with Russia,” said the analyst.

Ion Tabirta is convinced that any harsher statement of Chisinau against Tiraspol will be definitely followed by a reaction on the part of Russia. “It is hard to make an exhaustive statement when we do not have a clear plan for settling the Transnistrian dispute. Besides statements, we also need effort at diplomatic level,” he stated.

As to some of the MPs’ assertions that the statement is sterile, the analyst said that Russia would like a tougher reaction from Chisinau in order to speculate on this. According to him, such statements will only escalate the conflict, but such a development should be prevented. He considers that more provocations on the part of Tiraspol will follow, but Chisinau must cope with them and use diplomatic and legal mechanisms to stop them.
