Moldova does not have potential and capacity to ensure its security without external support. Such conclusions were formulated in the talk show “Fabrika” on Publika TV channel, IPN reports.

Political commentator Roman Mihaes said the Moldovan army is poorly equipped and will not cope with a possible military aggression. “As Moldova is not a NATO member, this organization will not intervene in case of a military aggression. The national army is not outfitted. What will we do if we face a situation similar to that in Donbas or Donetsk? Even the troops deployed on the territory of Transnistria surpass the Moldovan army. If the status of neutrality is kept, we should learn from the practices of such neutral states as Sweden. It’s known that these countries spend more on the army than the NATO member states. The budget for the Moldovan army should also be increased,” he stated.

Former chief of the General Staff of the National Army, General Ion Corobceanu admitted that the Moldovan army is unable to cope with a military aggression and needs external support. “The cooperation with the EU and NATO should be high on the Government’s list of priorities. We are a country associated to the EU. The Europeans Union will assist us, including in training and equipping the armed forces,” he said.

Colonel in reserve Andrei Covrig said the military training for the national army is outdated. “Moldova used the Soviet model when it created the national army. The Baltic countries used another model and joined NATO,” he stated.

Media analyst Cristian Tabara said Moldova should take all the necessary measures to ensure its security given the geopolitical challenges. “Moldova should look carefully in all directions when it is about national security as the situation is rather difficult,” he stated.
