Moldova can successfully use different EU initiatives in European integration process
The Republic of Moldova can successfully make use of different EU initiatives, besides the Eastern Partnership, on its path to European integration. Such a conclusion was formulated in an event themed “The Danube – European Way” held as part of the Europe Day activities. It was attended by Romanian Ambassador in Chisinau Marius Gabriel Lazurca, students and teachers of the Academy of Economic Studies (ASEM).
The ambassador presented the Danube Strategy, which is an internal strategy of the EU aimed at developing the non-EU member states of the Danube region, Info-Prim Neo reports, quoting a communiqué from the Romanian Embassy in Chisinau.
The Danube Strategy is based on an initiative by the Romanian President Traian Basescu and Austrian Chancellor Alfred Gusenbauer. In June 2009, the European leaders asked the European Commission to prepare a strategy of the EU for the Danube region. The Danube Summit held in Bucharest on November 8, 2010 was attended by heads of state and government form 14 countries. Moldova was represented by Prime Minister Vlad Filat. The Danube Strategy includes a number of key areas. Moldova coordinates the Investment in People and Aptitudes area together with Austria.
The strategy aims to stimulate cooperation by optimally using existent programs such as the Regional Development Fund, the Cohesion Fund, and the European Social Fund. Moldova, alongside other states, can benefit from faster road and fluvial transport, cheaper and safer energy obtained by interconnection with the European systems and other sources, promotion of tourist and cultural destinations in partnership.
Among the objectives of the plan of action are the development of multimodal terminals in the Danube ports, significant diminution of risk floods, guaranteeing of high-speed broadband Internet access for all the citizens of the EU in the area, investments of 3% of the GDP in research and development, etc.
