Moldova becomes member of Global Peace Operations Initiative

Moldova has been accepted as a member of the Global Peace Operations Initiative (GPOI). The membership will enable Moldova to obtain $1.6 million for strengthening capacities of the Bulboaca shooting range and Peacekeeping Battalion no.22, among others, Info-Prim Neo reports. “This money will be destined for developing the practice facilities of the National Army, in particular that in Bulboaca, and will improve the efficiency of Moldova's participation in international operations. We need to modernize the National Army according to international standards”, President Nicolae Timfoti told a press briefing Monday. United States Ambassador William H. Moser stated for his part that his country appreciates the partnership with Moldova and is willing to support its efforts to develop peace support capacities. “This program, which is funded by the United States Government, aims to enhance international capacity to effectively conduct United Nations and regional peace support operations”, said the Ambassador. Minister of Defense Vitalie Marinunta announced that implementation of the program will start next year. GPOI was launched as the U.S. contribution to the broader G8 Action Plan for Expanding Global Capability for Peace Support Operations, adopted in 2004.
