Moldova scored a memorable victory against Poland 3-2 in the fourth match of the UEFA Euro 2024 qualifying tournament. The guests scored twice in the first half, through Arkadiusz Milik and Robert Lewandowski. Moldova had a spectacular performance in the second half of the game, IPN reports.
At the start of the second half, Ion Nicolaescu scored from outside the square and in the 79th minute tied at 2-2 after a sensational individual phase. The 24-year-old striker became the all-time top scorer of the national football team of Moldova with 12 goals. The victory goal was scored by Vladislav Baboglo with a head kick in the 85th minute.
The national team trained by Sergiu Kleshchenko scored five points and climbed to the third spot in Group E, being two points behind the Czech Republic. Moldova plays the next match away against the Faroe Islands on September 10.
President Maia Sandu congratulated the national football team on the victory. “Moldova, you are victorious when the people form a united team! Yesterday evening, the national football team of Moldova, in the match against Poland, showed that very good results can be achieved only by hard work, dedication and struggle till the end. We can invert any score in our favor, can catch the attention and admiration of those around,” said the official. “Congratulations to coach Sergey Kleshchenko and to Ion Nicolaescu, who became the best scorer of the national team. We are proud of you!”
