As many as 461 judgments ascertaining 616 violations by the Republic of Moldova were passed by the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) during September 12, 1997 – June 30, 2020. Among the most often violated rights are the right to a fair trial - 200 violations, or 32.5% of the total, and prohibition of torture – 142 violations, or 23%, IPN reports, with reference to a synthesis by the Legal Resources Center of Moldova.
According to the Center, among other rights violated by the Republic of Moldova are the right to liberty and security – 92 violations, the right to an effective remedy – 60 violations, the right to respect for the private and family life – 30 violations, the right to freedom of expression – 19 violations.
Among the most frequently met types of violations are the non-execution of court judgments – 68 violations, illegal quashing of irrevocable court judgments – 52 violations, detention in poor conditions – 46 violations, flawed investigation of maltreatment and death – 45 violations, maltreatment – 31 violations, deprivation of liberty against the national legislation – 28 violations and unjustifiable arrest – 27 violations.

Twenty-three years ago, on September 12, 1997, the Republic of Moldova became a party to the European Convention on Human Rights. By joining this, the Republic of Moldova undertook to respect the rights guaranteed by the Convention and recognized the case law of the European Court of Human Rights.
