The Republic of Moldova will be assessed by the World Health Organization Regional Office for Europe as it aspires to obtain the status of country that eliminated the mother-to-child transmission of HIV, IPN reports.
According to the Ministry of Health, the rate of the mother-to-child transmission of HIV is lower than 2%. The assessments at national level show that over 95% of the pregnant women in Moldova are under medical supervision until they give birth and are tested for HIV. Also, over 90% of the HIV-infected pregnant women benefit from antiretroviral therapy that essentially reduces the risk of mother-to-child transmission of HIV.
At the start of June, the Republic of Moldova was declared country that managed to eliminate the mother-to-child transmission of congenital syphilis. The announcement was made in a New York ceremony held on the occasion of the Nations General Assembly High-Level Meeting on Ending AIDS.
