Moldova as seen by British journalists

During the past five years, Moldova appeared in the British newspaper The Sun in five articles that were mainly about illegal immigrants that came to the UK. During the same period, The Financial Times mentioned Moldova in 15 articles that focused mostly on the Transnistrian dispute. These data are contained in a research carried out by the British journalist Thomas de Waal, specialist in issues related to the conflicts in Caucasus, Russia and the Black Sea. Recently, he had been in Moldova on a visit at the invitation of the OSCE Mission in Chisinau. Contacted by Info-Prim Neo, de Waal said that he does not know much about the particularities of the Moldovan press. “I only heard that a large part of the media outlets are subordinated to the ruling party, mainly the public television and radio, which should provide objective information.” He said that in a poor country, the media market is dominated by newspapers because it is cheaper to print them. He was very surprised to find out that the newspapers in Moldova are small in number. He presumed that this is because most of them do not hold interest as they center on propaganda rather than objective journalism. Thomas de Waal said that Moldova has more chances to join the European Union than Georgia at present.
