Moldova -- 3 days before Olympics end
3 days before the end of the Beijing Olympic Games, Moldova eyes its only chance left to win a medal. Moldova has not got any golden medal for 8 years.
The drama of the contest is maintained by boxer Veaceslav Gojan (54 kg) who obtained a sensation qualification for semifinals, being sure he'll get a medal.
The Moldovan boxer defeated his adversaries, one by one, managing to keep a difference of 7 points in front of the Indian Akhil Kumar, even in quarters.
The next duel deciding the color of the medal will be waged by Gojan against the Mongol Badar-Uganom Anhbatom, on Friday, 22 August. His performance will clarify Moldova's position in the general classification, as it is now on the 86th place.
Those 13 days of contests have hosted 216 finals at over 20 sports events. The Olympic wreaths have been distributed generously, yet not to the Moldovan sportspeople.
The big deceptions of the Moldovan team have been Ludmila Cristea (wrestling, 55 kg), Sergiu Toma (judo, 74 kg), Vitalie Grusac (box, 69 kg). They have been given credits by specialists as favorites, but, to the technicians' surprise, they have been eliminated in the preliminary stages.
Mediocre successes have been recorded by the weightlifters Vadim Vacarciuc (94 kg, European and world vice champion) and Eugeniu Bratan (94 kg), getting on positions 12 and, respectively, 13 in the general classification. On 21 August, another contestant, the leader of the Moldovan team, Nicolae Ceban (wrestling, 96 kg) lost his first fight to the Hungarian Sandor Kissu.
There were instead intriguing moments offered by the young Alexandru Dudoglo, 19 years (weightlifting, 69 kg), who won the 9th place and Andrei Gutu (weightlifting, 77 kg), who got the 8th position. Their results entitle them to attend the next Olympics in Britain in 2012.
Real fights have been staged by the athletes Ion Luchian (3000 m, hurdles) and Olga Cristea (800 m). Luchian came the 12th in an event dominated by Kenyans, and Cristea (world junior champion) managed to beat her own record, coming the 19th in the general classification.
