Moldelectrica announces limitation of power transfer capacity

The state-run Moldelectrica announces the limitation of the electricity transfer capacity of the national grid. During July 12-21, the capacity for Moldova/Ukraine commercial exchanges will be limited to values of 0 MW in both directions.

The decision to limit the capacity to transport electricity through high-voltage lines was taken following the increase in electricity consumption in Moldova, which inevitably led to a change in technical parameters, caused by the extreme weather conditions and high temperatures lately, said Moldelectrica.

“High temperatures increase the thermal resistance of conductors, which leads to their expansion and hence to the change in the length of the conductor, reducing the vertical distance to the ground. These physical changes can affect the structural stability and secure operation of the grid. To prevent associated risks, including overloads and possible interruptions, the TSO has put in place transfer capacity management measures”, Moldelectrica explained in a press release.

Over the past week, the company registered three disconnections on the Vulcănești-MGRES overhead power line segment. These disconnections were caused by thermal variations and mechanical stress on the conductors. To ensure operational stability and safety of the grid, amid increased electricity consumption and limited generation due to extreme temperatures, the company had to limit the values of the cross-border capacity.
