MoJ wants to put Superior Council of Prosecutors on a diet

A bill introduced by the Ministry of Justice seeks to remove three ex officio members from the Superior Council of Prosecutors and leave it only with ten members. The ex officio members are the chair of the Superior Council of the Judiciary, the Ministry of Justice and the People’s Advocate. Also, the Ministry wants the membership to last 2 instead of 4 years, and no consecutive terms.

Another proposed amendment aims to consolidate the independence of the Inspectorate of Prosecutors by subordinating it to the Superior Council instead of the Prosecutor General’s Office. The Council will be in charge of hiring the inspectors for 6-year terms. The inspectors will be authorized to examine any case assigned to the prosecutors under disciplinary inspection.

Also, the Ministry proposes merging the Council’s Selection and Career Board with the Evaluation Board.

The bill will be submitted to Parliament for consideration in the second reading.
