An international exercise under the codename Codrii 2009, engaging teams from 9 countries and international organizations in simulating response to an earthquake and a terrorist attack, will be held in Chisinau during February 9-13, Info-Prim Neo reports. The Civil-Military Emergency Preparedness Exercise Codrii 2009 is a Black Sea Initiative (BSI) drill organized by the Moldovan Civil Protection & Emergency Service in partnership with the United States European Command. “We must apply international procedures and standards so that we are able to request and receive international help in responding to emergencies, we must polish our national disaster response and management mechanism by comparing our response practices to those of the participating countries”, Civil Protection & Emergency Service head Mihail Harabagiu told a news conference today. The exercise will include a simulation of an earthquake with a hypothetical magnitude of 8 decrees on a scale where 12 is maximum, and an epicenter located in the Carpathians at a distance of 225 kilometers from Chisinau. The participants will have to find quick solutions to organize the relief mission in a situation where hypothetically the residential buildings will be seriously damaged, there will be no telephone connection, and the power lines will be down. The simulated terrorist assault will target the Chisinau International Airport, where the mock terrorists will be threatening with a bomb launch. A possible radioactive contamination will aggravate the simulated situation. The teams from Moldova, Bulgaria, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Romania, Armenia, Ukraine, Georgia and the US will cooperate to deal with the simulated disaster and emergency.
