The Mocanu-Plahotniuc scandal resulted in several criminal cases involving Victoriabank, Codru, Gemeni, TVR1, Franzeluta and Carmez, Acting President Mihai Ghimpu said after the meeting of the Supreme Security Council on September 3. He stressed the scandal is economic in character and does not affect the people’s security, Info-Prim Neo reports. In the Council’s meeting that was closed for the press, the security, defense and law enforcement agencies presented a report on the situation created after the former presidential adviser Sergiu Mocanu accused businessman Vlad Plahotniuc of owning illegal businesses and controlling state institutions. Mihai Ghimpu said after the meeting he did not instruct the representatives of the agencies how to act as he is not entitled to, but recommended that they verify all the accusations. “There were opened a number of criminal cases against persons and companies, even by 2-3 against one,” he said, without giving details. Prime Minister Vlad Filat, who is a member of the Council, was absent when the report was presented as he was taking part in another event. The leader of the Moldova Noastra Alliance Serafim Urecheanu did not make statements for the press, while the Democrat leader Marian Lupu said they were furnished with interesting facts. “It was agreed that all the information should be checked in accordance with the law. The investigation goes on. It is the court that will decide if Mocanu was right,” Lupu stated. Another subject discussed at the meeting was the fight against organized crime. “We established that the Communist government hid rapes, thefts, robberies and other offences in order to present things in a favorable light, but the provided information shows the actual crime rate was rather high,” said Mihai Ghimpu.
