Mircea Geoană: Pandemic represents test of solidarity between NATO and Moldova

NATO Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoană said the North Atlantic Treaty Organization during the next few years could invest more in the Republic of Moldova, if there are such requests from the Moldovan authorities. NATO stands ready to assist the Republic of Moldova in the modernization and democratization process without losing the status of neutrality stipulated in the Constitution, IPN reports.

NATO Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoană noted that in time, within the Partnership for Peace, NATO has implemented a number of projects in Moldova, like those to dispose of pesticides, to create a cybersecurity laboratory at the Technical University. NATO also offers grants for developing science to researchers in the Republic of Moldova. NATO is disposed to anytime extend the area of support for the Republic of Moldova.

“If the Republic of Moldova wants, we will expand the existing partnership so that the authorities in Chisinau do reforms, make the necessary changes for the own citizens, which can accelerate the tendency of coming closer to Europe. Romania is a natural and steadfast partner on the Europeans path of the Republic of Moldova. But it is the citizens of the Republic of Moldova who should decide their future,” Mircea Geoană stated in the talk show ”Emphasis on Today” on TVR Moldova channel.

The official noted that since the start of the pandemic, the NATO offered humanitarian aid to Republic of Moldova for fighting and stopping the spread of the virus.

“I’m glad that the Republic of Moldova’s request to NATO to offer more medical assistance in a very difficult situation was welcomed. From the angle of the NATO-Republic of Moldova partnership, this pandemic is a test of solidary. Every time at the request of the Republic of Moldova, NATO responds positively,” noted Mircea Geoană.

Recently, the Republic of Moldova received the second part of the medical equipment provided by NATO. The donation consisted of 100,000 FFP2 masks to the value of US$ 190,000. The medical equipment was transmitted to the Municipal Children’s Hospital “Valentin Ignatenco”. The first part of NATO’s assistance was delivered to Chisinau in February. Then the Republic of Moldova received 25,000 personal protective suits (Tyvek 600+) to the value of over US$300,000.
