Mircea Geoană: Nothing can hamper a country from choosing wanted destiny

The Republic of Moldova should continue the reforms and changes not because this is what the European Union wants, but because the country’s citizens should have a decent future, NATO Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoană stated in the program “Emphasis on today” on TVR Moldova channel, IPN reports.

“The most important thing for the Republic of Moldova is to continue the reform process, the internal transformation process and not because NATO or the European Union or the Monetary Fund, or the World Bank, or the companies say this, but because the citizens of the Republic of Moldova need a more prosperous country, a country that would ensure a decent future, a country that can choose the direction and place it wants to have in the international constellation”.

Mircea Geoană noted that for the representatives of the EU, for NATO, it is important that the reforms that were launched in Moldova continue. Also, making reference to the area in which we live and to the historical past, the European official said the citizens and the authorities are those that choose what future they want.

“Nothing can hamper a country, the citizens to choose the wanted destiny, to have a country in which they could live with pleasure, in which they could develop, take care of the elderly and the young and could cope with a pandemic. It is a problem of geography, but it is also a problem of political will, of people’s will,” stated the Romanian official.

He called on the Republic of Moldova to further cooperate with the European Union, with NATO and with the Western states.

“The best method to persuade the people is to tell them: go on with the reforms, continue to open doors with the political and democratic West as, if you look at the economy of the Republic of Moldova, trade, investments are 70% made with Western countries, with NATO countries, with EU member states, with neutral states of the EU that are not NATO members. My message is very simple: prosperity, security and democracy are the most important things that make a country be successful or continue to struggle in poverty and loneliness.”
