Mircea Geoană: NATO expects provocations in Moldova, but no military threats

NATO expects false-flag provocative actions in the Republic of Moldova, where attempts at destabilization are already underway, but does not see imminent military threats. Rather, these would be attempts to create problems for Ukrainian forces in western Ukraine, particularly in the Odessa region, NATO Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoana said in an interview with Digi24.

Geoană said that NATO remains extremely careful in terms of support for countries that are under such pressure, especially since the conflict in Ukraine risks becoming a long-term one, and Ukraine must be supported not only to limit its losses, but to win this war.

“On the other hand, despite the increasingly insistent rhetoric coming from Moscow, NATO has no evidence that Russia intends to use nuclear weapons. Such a speech is intended to put psychological pressure on Ukraine and Western democracies”, said the NATO official.

On April 25, the headquarters of Transnistria’s so-called security ministry was attacked with grenade launchers. One day later, two other explosions hit radio towers in Grigoriopol, and the next day gunshots were heard in Cobasna, where one of the largest ammunition depots in Eastern Europe is located. In response, the Transnistrian de facto authorities introduced a state of emergency for 15 days.
