Ministry of Justice proposes harsher sanctions for corruption

The Ministry of Justice will submit to Parliament a set of amendments which would propose toughening penalties for corruption. Among the sanctions proposed is to deprive those sentenced of such violations of their entitlement to social benefits granted by their positions, reports Info-Prim Neo, quoting a communique from the Ministry of Justice. The Ministry started to develop a legislative package on combating corruption in the judicial system during a workshop that takes place this week. The workshop brings together experts from the Ministry of Justice, the Center for Combating Economic Crimes and Corruption, the Intelligence and Security Service, representatives of judicial institutions and of civil society, assisted by foreign experts. The workshop’s participants also work on a bill to regulate the method of testing the integrity of those employed in the justice sector, as well as on bill introducing the requirement for candidates for the posts of judges, prosecutors and criminal investigation officers to undergo polygraph tests. Additionally, a series of amendments to ensure the certainty of legal incomes collected by judges or other public employees is to be elaborated, such as the obligation to prove the source of their wealth or the interdiction to extensively use properties that are not registered on their names. The final package will be submitted to the Government this autumn, and then to the Parliament for debating.
