Ministry of Home Affairs to become guarantor of people’s security during next five years

The Ministry of Home Affairs of the Republic of Moldova during the next five years aims to become a guarantor of the citizens’ security and also a security provider in the region. The objectives were set down in a new strategic document of the Ministry that was presented in the Council on Strategic Policy Dialogue – Together4Home Affairs. The event was organized by the Ministry with the assistance of the EU.

Minister of Home Affairs Ana Revenco said that in the context of the refugee crisis and not only, the partnerships for ensuring the safety of people and borders should be strengthened. The Ministry invites the partners to together ensure the security expected by the citizens of Moldova. The document envisions the improvement of interoperability on data exchange as many crimes moved online now that digitization has developed.

The Ministry aims to be a guarantor of the people’s security, which means that it wants to strengthen the capacity by integrated management of human resources and by tackling institutional processes in a unified way so as to assume greater responsibility and to avoid the duplication of duties or waste of resources. The digitization of services is also very important as is the fight against organized crime. Also, the Ministry aims to become a security provider in the region by extending international cooperation and exchanging data.

The Head of the EU Delegation to Moldova Janis Mazeiks said the European Union supports border management through the consultants delegated to work on the border with Ukraine. A number of missions, such as EUBAM and Frontex with which the Republic of Moldova managed to sign agreements in a record period of time, already function. The support offered by the EU and its member states shows the intention to continue cooperating with Moldova, with the Ministry of Home Affairs.

U.S. Ambassador to Moldova Kent Logsdon said the Ministry of Home Affairs plays a critical role not only in maintaining internal security, but also in ensuring border security. The U.S. offered support to the Border Police. The United States is determined to help the partners in Moldova to manage the refugee crisis and to simultaneously keep up reforms in the fight against corruption, improving the digitization environment, strengthening the capacity of law enforcement agencies and supporting the European integration course of Moldova. Reforms are still needed for Moldova to become a functional democracy with government institutions that would serve the people, not oligarchs.

Deputy Prime Minister Nicu Popescu, Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, said all the authorities, institutions cooperated between them and worked day and night, ensuring significant functionality in the management of the refugee crisis. To be ready to cope with other eventual challenges, the solidarity between partners needs to be strengthened.

Minister of Finance Dumitru Budianschi urged to combine forces so as to help Moldova achieve results in ensuring regional security in accordance with its economic capacity and size.
