Ministry of Foreign Affairs clarifies who can have diplomatic passports
Family members of diplomats, including children, are entitled to special passports only if they accompany diplomats to missions abroad, the Moldovan Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration clarified in a statement quoted by Info-Prim Neo.
The Ministry makes these clarifications in response to what it saw as erroneous interpretations of proposed amendments to Law no.273 on Identity Documents.
According to the Ministry, the issuance of special passports to family members accompanying diplomats to foreign missions is necessary, including because they need to to acquire a diplomatic long-stay visa in order to initiate formal accreditation procedures with the foreign authorities.
The amendments in question do not apply to the employees of the Ministry's central office or to other categories of public office holders who are entitled to special identification documents and who work on the territory of Moldova.
The Ministry submitted the amendments to Law no.273 in October, proposing adjustments to the new standards for issuing biometric passports, including for children.
