A Mercedes Sprinter minibus was hit by a train at a level crossing in Cuporani village of Leova district on June 19. As a result of the impact, the minibus passenger died, while the driver suffered serious injuries, IPN reports.

According to the General Police Inspectorate, the driver of the minibus aged 58, together with a man of the same age, travelled through Cuporani from the direction of Cantemir town towards Tigheci village. When reaching the level crossing without barriers, the driver ignored the luminous sign that banned the crossing and the sonorous sign of the train.

The train of Depot No. 3 Basarabeasca travelled from the direction of Tigheci. This struck the car laterally, on the right side. Both of the men were seriously hurt and were rushed to the Cantemir District Hospital. The passenger died shortly afterward, while the driver is in a serious state.

An investigation is under way.
