Minibus drivers' strike goes into second day

Minibus drivers will continue the strike today, September 27. Ion Mamaliga, head of the Association of Private Carriers, told Info-Prim Neo that the drivers won’t go to work at least until 10 AM because the local authorities didn’t decide anything at the meeting with route administrators on Wednesday. The Chisinau City Hall, for its part, announced a set of conditions that minibus drivets must accept before the Municipality starts considering to increase the minibus fare as the carriers demand. Mamaliga says that the drivers are waiting for the Chisinau Municipal Council to assemble, where they hope their problem will at least be addressed, if not included on the agenda. After the CMC meeting, the administrators and drivers will make a final decision on whether or not to continue the strike. Mamaliga stated that during an earlier City Hall meeting authorities told the administrators that they could do whatever they want and the authorities would try to make do without minibuses. As a result, Mamaliga says, virtually all the minibus drivers will continue the stoppage today. Chisinau's transportation chief Adrian Boldurescu was not readily available for comments. According to a press release of the City Hall, Mayor of Chisinau Dorin Chirtoaca proposed a deal to the administrators of minibus routes in order to ensure the necessary conditions for transportation of passengers. He put forward the following requirements: the transportation of passengers within the limit of available seats according to the vehicle’s technical passport; the 50 km/h speed limit; stopping only in minibus stops; respecting the timetable and displaying it in each minibus; the timetable will include the exact time when the minibus arrives in the station; banning smoking, the use of mobile phones or other audio and video devices while driving; using safety belts, ensuring a civilized behavior from the driver, displaying a personal card with the driver’s name and surname and the company’s contact data, etc.; ensuring the proper technical condition of the transport units and a clean appearance; building terminal stations and providing the necessary hygienic conditions for employees; equipping minibuses with GPS for monitoring their routes (their speed, location, time, etc.); creating a common center for monitoring the minibus network; sacking unruly drivers (more than 3 deviations per month) and banning them from being employed on other routes (creating a blacklist of drivers). Minibus drivers went on strike on Wednesday morning, September 26, demanding the minibus fare to be increased from 3 to 5 lei.
