The first mini-invasive thoracic cancer surgery will be carried out at the Chisinau Oncology Institute by the end of this year. The Institute’s administration is looking for funds to renovate and outfit the building that will house the Mini-Invasive Celioscopic Surgery Center with 25 beds, where surgeries will be performed.
Contacted by IPN, Oncology Institute director Victor Cernat said the equipment for the Surgery Center, which is very costly, will be bought through a project of the Japan International Cooperation Agency that will provide a loan of €60 million for renovating and improving the quality of services in six national health institutions. The Oncology Institute is one of the beneficiaries of this project. The surgical equipment will arrive in Chisinau in autumn.
The equipment will help perform mini-invasive surgeries in thoracic, cytological, abdominal and urological cancers. The mini-invasive operations in case of abdominal and urologic diseases are not a novelty for Moldova. Doctors of the Oncology Institute have performed such surgeries for two years. But the equipment they use needs to be changed.
Children will also undergo mini-invasive surgeries. All the costs will be covered with money from the state budget.
