Mihai Popșoi: Justice sector reform remains our priority and we start from SCP and SCM

The justice sector reform is the national objective set by the current government, while the clearing of the system of toxic and corrupt elements starts by cleaning the Superior Council of Prosecutors (SCP) and the Superior Council of Magistracy (SCM), said Parliament Deputy Speaker Mihai Popșoi. According to him, pre-vetting will be the main element of the justice sector reform and, after the candidates for member of the two institutions are assessed, the judges and prosecutors will also be subject to assessment, IPN reports.

According to the official, the relevant bill that was given a first reading provides that an assessment commission will check the integrity, correctness and professionalism of all the candidates who aim to hold the post of SCP or CSM member. The assessment commission will consist of national and international experts who will be confirmed by the votes of 3/5 of the MPs.

“The SCM and SCP are the backbone of the justice system. Now that the terms in office of the members of the two institutions expired, we can reform the whole system of justice. However, if corrupt, incompetent persons who aim to enrich themselves form part of the system, not much will change. That’s why we focus on this pre-vetting,” Mihai Popșoi stated in the talk show “Important” on TVC21 channel.

He noted that the PAS government managed to overcome isolation and the Republic of Moldova became visible at foreign level and obtained significant support on the part of the development partners.

“Our country during the past few years had been practically isolated and the President during four years hadn’t visited Romania or Ukraine. It was a shame. Now we enjoy not only the openness, but also the colossal support of our European partners that offered us €150 million and now we negotiate, discuss new support for the Republic of Moldova so as to cope with the faced difficulties. We have a three-year memorandum with the IMF. Over US$500 million will go to foster economic development, to increase competitiveness as we can raise salaries and pensions only this way,” stated Mihai Popșoi.

Among the accomplishments of the current government during six months, the Deputy Speaker mentioned the increasing of the minimum pension to 2,000 lei, offering of natural gas subsidies, provision of 700 lei in assistance during the cold months. Yesterday, Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilița said that for the first 150 meters of consumed gas, the gas rate for household users will not increase, no matter what the National Agency for Energy Regulation decides following Moldovagaz’s request to raise the rate to 15.59 lei per cubic meter.
