Mihai Popșoi: I regret absence of opposition from last sitting of spring session

The opposition should defend its interests by taking part in debates, Deputy Speaker of Parliament Mihai Popșoi said, referring to the absence of the parliamentary opposition from the last sitting of the spring session. The PAS MP noted that most of the bills proposed by the opposition are populist and do not have financial backing and they are therefore not examined in Parliament, IPN reports.

At the last plenary sitting of the Parliament’s spring session, the MPs of the Bloc of Communists and Socialists left the assembly hall. In the absence of the opposition, over 40 draft laws were adopted by the PAS parliamentary majority without debates.

“I regret the absence of our mates from the opposition. Having the experience of the opposition, we wouldn’t have missed such an opportunity to defend the interests of the citizens who voted for us and to state our opinion. The opposition decided differently. The debates would have been more animated. I think it would have been useful for the citizens of the Republic of Moldova to see authentic debates, not only a monologue. The mates from the opposition decided to better withdraw. It is their choice. The representatives of the opposition should defend the interests by taking part in debates,” Mihai Popșoi stated in the program “Public Space” on Radio Moldova station.

The Deputy Speaker said the opposition’s legislative initiatives that are judicious and have financial backing are debated in Parliament.

“We added the opposition’s bills to the legislative agenda, but they weren’t debated because the opposition was absent. In the last sitting and in the sitting held two weeks ago, a bill put forward by MP Burduja was included in the Parliament’s agenda and was to be debated. But in the absence of the opposition, this wasn’t possible. As to the other initiatives of the opposition, we must admit that they are fully populist and do not have financial backing. It is an irresponsibility to come up with proposals for which you know that there is no financial support and to later get angry because these weren’t accepted,” stated Mihai Popșoi.

The last sitting of the Parliament’s spring session was held on July 31. Under the legislature’s regulations, Parliament has two ordinary sessions a year – the spring session in February-July and the autumn session in September-December.
