Deputy Prime Minister Mihai Popsoi, Minister of Foreign Affairs, discussed the regional security situation, the impact of the war in Ukraine on the Republic of Moldova, and the necessary measures to enhance the country’s energy resilience on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference. These topics were addressed during bilateral meetings with his counterparts from Poland, Lithuania, Iceland, and Portugal, IPN reports.
During discussions with the Polish Minister of Foreign Affairs, Radosław Sikorski, Mihai Popșoi expressed gratitude for Poland’s continuous support in implementing sectoral projects in Moldova and presented Chisinau’s priorities for European integration, especially as Poland is set to assume the Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the first half of 2025. Minister Sikorski reaffirmed Poland’s commitment to providing ongoing assistance and expertise to Moldova.
Talks with Kęstutis Budrys, Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, focused on the priorities for bilateral cooperation in 2025, with both sides appreciating the upward dynamic of their relations. The Lithuanian official reiterated Lithuania’s strong support for Moldova’s European path and expressed readiness to continue providing assistance for legislative harmonization with the EU acquis.
In a meeting with Iceland’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Thorgerdur Katrín Gunnarsdóttir, Mihai Popșoi conveyed his desire to deepen bilateral cooperation with the new Icelandic government.
The Moldovan official highlighted the importance of strengthening political dialogue and diversifying diplomatic representation, while emphasizing opportunities to enhance economic relations and cooperation in the energy sector.
“The meeting with Portugal’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Paulo Rangel, provided an opportunity to exchange views on strengthening bilateral cooperation and fostering political dialogue between the two countries,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated.
On the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference, Deputy Prime Minister Popșoi also met with the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Alain Berset. Discussions focused on the outcomes of Berset’s recent visit to Moldova in the context of the launch of the new Council of Europe Action Plan for Moldova (2025-2028). The two officials highlighted the intense cooperation between Moldova and the Council of Europe, as well as progress in key areas such as justice, media, combating domestic violence, countering propaganda and disinformation, fighting corruption and money laundering, and protecting the rights of children and refugees.
