Mihai Ghimpu: We do not give up referendum
“We do not abandon the idea of a referendum. This is the decision of the Alliance for European Integration that was supported by the Council of Europe. If the PCRM wants a compromise, it will better adhere to the Alliance's decision,” the Head of Parliament Mihai Ghimpu said, quoted by Info-Prim Neo.
“The time when a compromise could be reached has ended. The parliamentary commission for amending Article 78 of the Constitution included Communist lawmakers as well. They are not serious. We cannot govern the country with them,” Mihai Ghimpu said, adding he considers Vladimir Voronin's proposal an attempt to destabilize the Alliance.
In a press briefing this morning, the leader of the PCRM said his party is ready to support the Alliance' initiative allowing for direct election of the President as it is backed by the Council of Europe. In order not to spend money on a referendum, the PCRM suggests amending Article 78 of the Constitution in Parliament. “This will be the consensus expected by the Moldovan society,” Vladimir Voronin said.
