The uninominal voting system favors the Socialists and, if the electoral system is modified to introduce this system, these could win the future parliamentary elections, chairman of the Liberal Party Mihai Ghimpu stated in the talk show “In Depth” on PRO TV Chisinau channel, IPN reports.
“In the 1990s, we won the elections by uninominal voting with 78% of the poll. We then thought how to organize elections on the left bank of the Nistru and reached the conclusion that only voting by constituencies can ensure everyone will vote. Elections in Transnistria cannot take place now as those who are there have lived long in a nondemocratic environment,” stated the Liberal heavyweight.
Mihai Ghimpu assured that the Liberal MPs will not vote for the introduction of the uninominal voting system. “Ghimpu can be persuaded neither by tanks nor by pressure or vodka. The people are for uninominal voting because they don’t know what this means. Only the Democratic MPs are for uninominal voting,” he said.
In the program, Mihai Ghimpu presented his concept of the territorial-administrative reform. “We incur many costs with the districts. These were constituted according to political, not economic criteria. We will win nothing if we cut two-three ministries and leave the districts. Romania’s experience shows the European projects were directed based on groups of counties. I think we should have three counties in the Republic of Moldova – North, South and Center,” stated the Liberal leader.
