The Socialist and Liberal candidates will compete in the runoff of the new local mayoral elections in the municipality of Chisinau, the president of the Liberal Party Mihai Ghimpu stated in the program “Important” on TVC21 channel, IPN reports.
According to him, the Liberal Party’s candidate Valeriu Munteanu has big chances of winning the mayoral elections in Chisinau because he intends to hold the mayoralty not only during a year as the other candidates intend to. “Some want to use this year to campaign for the parliamentary elections. Valeriu Munteanu will come for a longer period of time. He forms part of the Liberal team and we want to complete the projects initiated by Dorin Chirtoaca,” stated Mihai Ghimpu.
Speaking about the mixed-member electoral system based on which this autumn’s parliamentary elections will be held, the Liberal leader said this system was adopted in a move to enable the current regime to remain in power. If he does not enter the next legislative body, Moldova’s union with Romania will be his main preoccupation afterward.
