Mihai Ghimpu: Shift to CE post-monitoring stage is Moldovan authorities' major objective

Acting President Mihai Ghimpu expressed his regret that Moldova has been monitored by the Council of Europe for such a long period of time, but voiced hope all the commitments to this organization will be fulfilled. “The switch to the post-monitoring stage is the Moldovan authorities' main objective in the relations with the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe,” Mihai Ghimpu said at a meeting with the PACE co-rapporteurs for Moldova, Josette Durrieu and Egidijus Vareikis, on April 6. Josette Durrieu and Egidijus Vareikis are on a fact-finding visit to Chisinau, Info-Prim Neo reports. “In the process of promoting the democratic reforms and achieving the European integration objectives, the Moldovan authorities will be guided by the resolutions and recommendations made by the Council of Europe,” Mihai Ghimpu said, quoted by the presidential press service. This year, it is 15 years since Moldova joined the PACE. In the meeting, Mihai Ghimpu spoke about the sociopolitical situation in Moldova and the decision to modify article 78 of the Constitution made recently by the leaders of the Alliance for European Integration. In the second half of this year, Egidijus Vareikis and the new PACE co-rapporteur for Moldova who will replace Josette Durrieu will pay a fact-finding visit to Chisinau and will then present a report on how the Moldovan authorities fulfill their obligations. The PACE co-rapporteurs make monitoring visits to Moldova every year. They analyze the situation in the country and how the recommendations and resolutions of the PACE are implemented.
