The parliamentary commission for the modification of article 78 of the Constitution will examine the amendment proposals submitted by the PCRM and the AEI and will make a suggestion in Parliament, Moldova's Acting President Mihai Ghimpu said on his return from Strasbourg on May 6, Info-Prim Neo reports. “If the problem is not solved in Parliament, we will hold again discussions with the Venice Commission,” he stated. “I think the visit to Strasbourg was promising. Now everything depends on this Commission,” Mihai Ghimpu added. He said in this connection that he will not hurry to dissolve the Parliament and that the discussions will continue. Ion Plesca, the head of the mentioned parliamentary commission, said the commission will have a working meeting next week and will discuss this subject. “I hope we will find a solution as soon as possible. We will do our utmost,” Ion Plesca said. The president of the Venice Commission Gianni Buquicchio told Radio Free Europe that the Moldovan delegation that had been in Strasbourg praised the amendment proposal of the Alliance for European Integration. He said a solution must be identified in concert with the political forces from the Opposition. Gianni Buquicchio also said the politicians must make sure that article 78 is amended before the dissolution of Parliament. “I told Mister Ghimpu that they must act quickly. They cannot dissolve Parliament before June 15. However, this situation cannot last for three of four years more. Most probably, the legislative body will be dissolved at the end of this year, Gianni Buquicchio said, quoted by Radio Free Europe. According to the European official, a consultative referendum can be held to ask the population how they want the head of state to be elected. The possible amendments will anyway be adopted in Parliament.
