Mihai Ghimpu refuses to accept judges who supported Voronin regime

“I ask you not to send me judges who supported the Voronin regime,” Caretaker President Mihai Ghimpu said at the May 11 meeting of the Supreme Council of Magistrates, when the members of the Council asked him why he refuses to sign decrees to appoint judges to posts without providing explanations, Info-Prim Neo reports. “You should inform at least the president of the Supreme Council of Magistrates why you refuse to sign, or provide information before we start proposing candidates,” said the member of the Council Boris Negru. “If I refuse to sign, it means you are not right. Do not field judges who supported the Voronin regime, I ask you. You know them better,” Mihai Ghimpu said. He also said he is waiting for an answer as to who ordered that the judges try cases at police stations in April last year. The members of the previous Council who worked in April 2009 said they asked the president of the Council Nicolae Clima to check if the judges did justice in police commissariats, but he and former prosecutor general Valeriu Gurbulea said it was a stupidity. “The European officials made it clear that we must implement changes. No changes are possible without an appropriate legal system,” Mihai Ghimpu said.
