Mihai Ghimpu: PDM assured us there are votes

The Liberal Party head Mihai Ghimpu said the leader of the PDM Marian Lupu assured the alliance that there are enough votes to elect the President. The statement was made in the program “In Profunzime” at the private TV channel Pro TV, Info-Prim Neo reports. ”We had discussions in the meting of the AEI Council, where Marian Lupu said that there are votes. The PLDM then said it wasn’t ready to give an answer. There are votes outside the alliance. We have the votes and full stop. I don’t think Marian Lupu would have agreed to run without votes,” said Mihai Ghimpu. He also said that he does not know who will give the necessary votes. “There are people who realize the situation,” Mihai Ghimpu stressed, adding pressure on the Communist MPs is not exerted, as the chairman of the PCRM Vladimir Voronin asserted. “Voronin believes that there is pressure, but who can force a person to do something that they don’t want?” asked Mihai Ghimpu. As to Marian Lupu’s proposal that the MPs should show the ballots when going out of the polling booth, Mihai Ghimpu said he agrees with this. “I want the people to know how the PL voted,” he stated. In the same program, Mihai Ghimpu suggested the PCRM may return to power if early legislative elections are held. “The budgetary-fiscal policy document provides for increasing the excise stamps on vodka, cigarettes and other products and this will lead to new price rises. Who will pursue this policy if we do not elect the head of state? The Communists who may come to power after the elections? The people can wait for a day or two, but not longer,” said Mihai Ghimpu. The legislative body is to elect the President on December 16. The previous elections set for November 18 failed as no candidate for the presidency was registered.
