Mihai Ghimpu optimistic new association agreement with EU will be signed by this yearend
“We must build a small Europe at home: insistently promote reforms, democratize the country and its institutions, and guarantee the freedom of the press. All these will contribute to the modification of Moldova’s status from neighboring country into associate member of the EU,” Head of Parliament and Acting President of Moldova Mihai Ghimpu said during a program on Radio Moldova station.
“The world changes every day. Though many experts say the signing of an association agreement between Moldova and the EU by the end of this year or at the start of next year is impossible, I remain optimistic,” Mihai Ghimpu said, quoted by Info-Prim Neo.
Asked when the talks over a new cooperation agreement between Moldova and the EU (no matter how it will be called) will start, Ghimpu stressed that Moldova has not even filed an application for accession as the previous government only declared that it wants to join the EU.
“It was no use for the EU to sign a new agreement before the election campaign. The previous administration has not achieved the major goals of the EU-Moldova Plan of Action. Now everything depends on us. The Alliance for European Integration pledged to implement economic reforms and democratize the country. These reforms aren’t easy. They are treated differently in the society. We do not think about seats in the future Parliament, but how to improve the life and ensure political and economic stability in the country,” Ghimpu said, stressing that there is no future without reforms and if the Alliance does not implement them, Moldova will miss the last chance.
