The leader of the Liberal Party Mihai Ghimpu said democracy was trampled over in the case of the invalidation of the early mayoral elections held in Chisinau municipality. In the program “Truth LIVE” on July 2, the politician, referring to the protest mounted in central Chisinau on July 1, noted the people’s dissatisfaction with the stolen vote, saying the presence at the protest was appropriate, IPN reports.
Mihai Ghimpu said the power has a devoted Premier and an equipped police force, while the leader of the PDM Vlad Plahotniuc is not afraid of protests. As to the large number of police officers who formed cordons near the house of the Democratic leader, he said Mister Plahotniuc is now the secretary general of the Moldovan Soviet Socialist Republic. “What the secretary and the party say that thing is done. The order is not discussed,” stated the politician.
Mihai Ghimpu said he does not understand why the protest organizers took a break until August 26 and presumed that the protest leaders pursue another goal than having the election of Andrei Nastase validated and someone actually prepares for parliamentary elections. “The protest was postponed until August and, if one more protest is mounted in September, we will then enter the campaign prior to the legislative elections. They want to conserve the protesters’ energy for this autumn’s campaign,” he stated. Laughing at the moderator’s supposition that the invalidation of the election suits Nastase more than the mayoralty, the Liberal leader said Nastase’s party would prefer to work in Parliament than to daily deal with sewerage-related problems.
Even if he admits that violations were committed in the election campaign, Mihai Ghimpu said the court decision is illegal. Commenting on the “likes” based on which the elections were invalidated, he invoked the experience of his party, when Valeriu Munteanu, having 60,000 “likes”, got only 9,000 votes.
In another development, Mihai Ghimpu said the people’s current distrust in state institutions and rulers is mainly due to the political cruising of MPs, which is fueled by corruption. As regards the banking fraud, he noted that Dorin Dragutanu, who was named governor of the National Bank at the suggestion of the Liberal Party, played the game of the group that stole the money.
