Mihai Ghimpu close to being penalized

The Liberal-Democratic MPs’ proposal to ban Liberal lawmaker Mihai Ghimpu from speaking in Parliament during three sittings didn’t garner the necessary number of votes. The penalty was asked for the reason that the MP used offensive language in last week’s sittings that were held behind closed doors. Mihai Ghimpu accused the Lib-Dems of telling lies, IPN reports.

The head of the Liberal-Democratic parliamentary group Valeriu Strelet said the language used by Mihai Ghimpu is beyond any criticism and the worst is that the lawmaker speaks this way not in corridors, but in the Parliament’s assembly hall. According to him, at least 20 MPs heard how Ghimpu swore at a Liberal-Democratic lawmaker.

For his part, Mihai Ghimpu stated he was ready to assume responsibility only if the shorthand notes show that he said something like this. “These are lies,” he said.

The MPs exchanged harsh replies and Ghimpu’s Liberals said that a campaign was launched against their leader. The Liberal-Democrats and the Liberal reformers voted in favor of penalizing Ghimpu.
