The chairman of the Liberal Party Mihai Ghimpu told a news conference that Mayor General of Chisinau Dorin Chirtoaca, who is the first deputy chairman of the PL, is investigated in a political case started by order of those who hold power in the Republic of Moldova, IPN reports.
Mihai Ghimpu said the investigation of Dorin Chirtoaca started when the PL drew ruling alliance allies’ attention to the fact that the Republic of Moldova does not follow the initially set European path. There is no evidence to prove the mayor’s blame and his placing under house arrest shows that this is a political case.
According to the Liberal leader, Dorin Chirtoaca was arrested based on an order made in 2015 and no relevant proofs have been collected during two years. They thus decided to arrest deputy mayor Nistor Grozavu, head of the Transport Division Igor Gamretski and secretary of the Chisinau Council Valeriu Didenco, who signed the urbanism certificate for the parking lots. Later they arrested the mayor, while the others were set free. This happened by order of ex-Liberal Anatol Salaru or of the Socialists, who want to take over the Chisinau City Hall, or of the Democratic leader Vlad Plahotniuc, who wants to remove the inconvenient politicians.
Liberal MP Ion Casian, who is a lawyer by profession, said the removal of the mayor’s lawyers from the trial is an additional proof showing that the case is political. “The invoked reason is defying. How could they become involved in the contractual relations between the lawyer and the client? Both the trial and the measures taken in relation to Dorin Chirtoaca are political in character. The Republic of Moldova was often convicted by the ECHR for such acts and will be convicted this time again,” stated Ion Casian.
Dorin Chirtoaca was arrested on May 25 on charges of influence peddling in the case of pay parking spaces. In two days he was placed under house arrest and is still under this form of arrest. Prosecutor in charge of the case Dumitru Robu recently said the investigation is close to an end and the case will be soon sent to court.
