Mihai Ghimpu and Iurie Leanca to take part in funeral of Polish president and his wife

Acting President Mihai Ghimpu and Foreign Minister Iurie Leanca will participate in the funeral of Polish President Lech Kaczynski and his wife Maria Kaczynska, who died in a plane crash together with 94 Polish officials and crew members. The presidential couple will be buried at the Wawel Cathedral in Krakow on Sunday, April 18, the Parliament’s press service informs, quoted by Info-Prim Neo. Mihai Ghimpu will send a message of condolence to the Polish people in the name of the Moldovan citizens. More than 70 foreign delegations are expected to come to the funeral, including of the U.S. President Barack Obama and the Russian President Dmitry Medvedev. A plane carrying the Polish president and dozens of the country’s top political and military leaders to the site of a Soviet massacre of Polish officers in World War II crashed in western Russia on April 10, killing everyone on board. President Lech Kaczynski’s plane tried to land in a thick fog, missing the runway and snagging treetops about half a mile from the airport in Smolensk, scattering chunks of fuselage across a bare forest. Mr. Kaczynski, 60, was on his way to Katyn, where members of the Soviet secret police executed Polish officers captured after the Red Army invaded Poland in 1939.
