The Lyceum “Mihai Eminescu” in Comrat municipality, which is the only Romanian-language lyceum in the municipality, in the next 15 months will have a new building. The foundation stone of the building was laid in a festivity on June 19. The project to erect the building is financed by the Government of Romania and with state budget funds, IPN reports.
“Mihai Eminescu” Lyceum principal Svetlana Stoianov said that about 700 students could study in the new building. They will have access to one of the most modern facilities in the region. “The gym, canteen, activities hall, library, administrative blocks and physics, chemistry and biology laboratories will be the best and most innovative ones,” she stated.
Romania’s Ambassador to Moldova Daniel Ioniță reminded that Romania has been near the Moldovan citizens through projects intended for them first of all. Today’s event shows that Romania is consistent when it supports Moldova’s European course without reservations. “Since 2016, many things have changed, including governments, but our wish to support education in the Republic of Moldova remained unchanged,” he stated.
Prime Minister Ion Chicu noted that this is a historical event. “It is a rare happening in Moldova during the last 25-30 years, when the foundation stone of a school is laid. This is a signal that our society returns to normality and that we started to really think about the future generations,” he said.
The Bashkan of Gagauzia Irina Vlah underlined that a new building for the lyceum means better conditions and more possibilities for more children. According to her, investing in children who want to know more languages means investing in a safer future.
Minister of Education, Culture and Research Igor Sharov said the Government of Romania provided constant assistance in implementing education projects in Moldova. Besides the almost 1,000 kindergartens that have been renovated, more than half of the buses that take students to schools were provided by Romania. Romania also offers scholarships, organizes educational camps, provides textbooks and supports the education policies.
It is panned that the block will start to be used at the beginning of the 2021 school year. The total cost of works was assessed at 20.7 million lei, 15 million lei of which is the contribution of the Romanian Government, while 5.7 million lei was provided by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Research. The lyceum now has 476 students.
