Mihai Cimpoi awarded Om Emerit title

Moldovan President Nicolae Timofti today confereed the honorary title of “Om Emerit” on Academician Mihai Cimpoi. Mihai Cimpoi has received this distinction for special merits in the development of literature, the national revival movement and for promoting the work of Mihai Eminescu, Info-Prim Neo reports. According to a press release from the President's Office, the head of state handed Mihai Cimpoi the “Om Emerit” honorary title at the first Congress of Eminescologs that took place today at the Moldovan Academy of Sciences. “Your prolific activity in the fields of science, literature and politics characterize you as a great creator and upholder of genuine cultural values, as a personality with steadfast patriotic feelings and beliefs, as one of the most active defenders and promoters of our national identity. During the totalitarian era, being repeatedly accused of nationalism, you displayed honesty and courage, unrelentingly choosing the truth”, said the President during the ceremony. Mihai Cimpoi was born on 3 September 1942 in Larga, Briceni. He is a reputed critic, eminescolog, literary historian, literary editor and Bessarabian essayist. Cimpoi was editor for the Nistru magazine and the “Cartea Moldoveneasca” and “Literatura Artistica” publishing houses, literary secretary for the National Theater and the Poetical Theater “Alexei Mateevici”. From September 1991 to October 2010, he was the president of the Moldovan Writers’ Union, and now he is a member of the Romanian Writers’ Union’s Board. He is also an honorary member of the Romanian Academy, and a member of the Moldovan Academy of Sciences, Romanian Writers’ Union and the World Writers’ Union.
