Mihai Capatana: The center-right cannot have a common candidate with the left

The parties of the center-right cannot have a common candidate with the parties of the left in the presidential elections because the latter want the Association Agreement with the EU to be suspended, considers the secretary general of the European People’s Party of Moldova (PPEM), Mihai Capatana. In the public debate “Common candidate of the right in the presidential elections: necessity and possibility, advantages and disadvantages”, which is the 57th installment of the series “Developing political culture by public debates”, this, this said the PPEM will not have discussions on a common candidate with the Party of Socialists and the “Our Party”.

Mihai Capatana believes that the necessity of a common candidate on the center-right is very acute today because there are a lot of parties on this segment. The current government and the parties of the left want more candidates to run in the presidential elections so as to make sure that they will go through to the second round of voting.

Speaking about the profile of the common candidate for the presidential elections, the secretary general of the PPEM said this must not represent and defend the interests of the group that will field him. This must be the President of all the people of the Republic of Moldova, regardless of the spoken language. Therefore, the future Head of State must consolidate society.

Mihai Capatana noted that the future President must maintain the country’s European course. “This candidate must have capacities and courage to go out before the people, to identify the problems and suggest solutions to them. He must have the courage to fight corruption and poverty too because the people live at poverty line,” he stated.

The representative of the PPEM said it won’t be easy for the parties of the center-right to identify a common candidate for the presidential elections. That’s why the participants in the identification process must forget about vainglory and party frustrations.

The public debate “Common candidate of the right in the presidential elections: necessity and possibility, advantages and disadvantages” is the 57th installment of the series of debates “Developing political culture by public debates” that are organized with the assistance of the German Foundation “Hanns Seidel”.
