A pilot project to test persons for drug driving with special devices will be implemented immediately after legislative amendments are made in this regard. To combat violations of the traffic regulations, there will be used police filters, trap cars and surveillance cameras, Minister of Internal Affairs Adrian Efros told a news conference, being quoted by IPN.
Adrian Efros said that the Ministry will step up the security measures on public roads. Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, speeding and aggressive driving remain serious problems. Over 123,000 cases of speeding and over 4,000 cases of drunk driving were identified in the first eight months of this year. There were recorded more than 270 cases of aggressive behavior in traffic and over 10,000 cases of non-giving of way to pedestrians. For their part, pedestrians committed over 23,000 violations.
The minister noted that activities to prevent driving violations were launched on Sunday evening. The traffic police work in areas with an increased risk. The filters that are to be set up will be aimed at identifying persons driving with the suspended or annulled driver’s license.
According to Adrian Efros, the 1,200 road accidents that occurred in the first eight months of this year resulted in 122 deaths and 1,497 persons hurt. “Driving at an inappropriate speed on a given road section was the cause of 378 accidents that resulted in the death of 64 persons and the injuring of 456 persons. Of the total number of accidents, 90 were due to drunk driving and these ended with 18 deaths and 113 persons hurt,” stated the official.
