MFAEI: Moldova’s neutrality does not mean self-isolation

The Republic of Moldova’s cooperation with different international organizations, including NATO, represents the sovereign and independent decision of our country, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration (MFAEI) reacted after the spokeswoman for the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Maria Zakharova warned Moldova that the coming closer to NATO will mean “full loss of sovereignty”. Moreover, Chisinau reminds Moscow that it is Russia that violates the Supreme Law of the Republic of Moldova by illegally keeping its troops in the Transnistrian region, IPN reports.

On Thursday, the spokeswoman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia expressed her concern about Moldova’s eventual entry into NATO. Maria Zakharova warned the government in Chisinau that the coming close to NATO implies the “loss of sovereignty”. In reply, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Moldova said that any cooperation with the international organizations is the sovereign decision of the Republic of Moldova.

“The Republic of Moldova’s relations with different international organizations, including NATO, represent the sovereign and independent decision of our country. As to the Republic of Moldova – NATO partnership, this is 30 years long and is aimed at developing the capacities to counteract the new complex challenges and to ensure the security of our citizens and state,” said the spokeswoman for the MFAEI Igor Zakharov.

He underlined that Moldova’s neutrality does not mean self-isolation, while the Moldovan authorities will continue to develop partnerships with organizations and states that support and contribute to peacekeeping.

“We advise the official representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia to fully read Article 11 of our country’s Constitution, including paragraph (2), which says that “the Republic of Moldova does not allow deploying military troops of other states on its territory”, but namely the Russian Federation directly violates this article,” stated the representative of the MFAEI.

In accordance with the Constitution, the Republic of Moldova is a neutral state that proclaimed its permanent neutrality.
