The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration (MFAEI) has issued a travel alert for Iceland. The Icelandic authorities declared a state of emergency in the tow of Grindavík amid increased volcanic activity, IPN reports.

“The residents are obliged to leave the locality. We recommend avoiding trips to the affected locality and following the notices of Iceland’s Department for Civil Protection (almannavarnir.is) and the Icelandic authorities’ instructions,” stated the Ministry.

Thousands of people were evacuated from the area as the Icelandic authorities fear the multiple quakes point to an imminent volcanic eruption. The residents of Grindavik were allowed to return home for a short period of time to take their belongings, but the situation remains uncertain.
