MFA: Moscow solely responsible for energy crisis

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) of the Republic of Moldova has stated that the responsibility for the energy crisis in Transnistria lies solely with the Russian Federation and Gazprom, which have cut off gas supplies in violation of contractual obligations. The statement was made following a meeting with the Russian Embassy's chargé d'affaires, Alexandr Andreev, who refused to make press statements after talks with the Moldovan authorities, IPN reports.

At the meeting, the MFA stressed that the recent allegations by the Russian Embassy are false, aimed at undermining Moldova's political and economic stability.

The MFA called on the Russian Embassy to immediately stop "the campaign of disinformation, manipulation with facts and creation of false narratives, which increasingly harm bilateral relations and strain the regional situation", the official MFA statement said.

The representative of the Embassy of the Russian Federation declined to comment. Although the meeting was scheduled to clarify the positions of the two sides, Aleksandr Andreev refused to make any statements to the press at the end of the talks. Asked about the details of the meeting and Russia's position in this context, the representative of the Embassy of the Russian Federation did not provide any further information and remained silent in front of journalists.

Recently the Russian Embassy in Moldova accused Chisinau of responsibility for the energy crisis in the Transnistrian region. According to a press note published on the Embassy's website, Moscow says that "deliberate ignorance by the Chisinau authorities of the numerous problems in relations with Gazprom" was the main cause of the lack of Russian gas in the Transnistrian region from January 1, 2025.

The Russian Embassy also accused the authorities in Chisinau and Kiev of "manipulating with false facts" as the pro-government media in the two capitals allegedly tried to shift responsibility for the crisis onto Moscow, despite the fact that Gazprom has halted supplies over Ukraine's refusal to allow gas transit.

This statement has been disputed by officials in Chisinau, who claim that Moscow is solely responsible for the crisis because it chose to cut off gas supplies to the Transnistrian region without respecting its contractual obligations.
