Ninety-three Roma students will benefit from merit scholarships of 1,200 lei. These will be granted monthly by the Ministry of Education and Research. According to the authorities, the purpose of the initiative is to reduce educational discrepancies and encourage young Roma to achieve academic success, IPN reports.
"In 2023, we had 49 recipients of merit scholarships, but this year the number is almost twice as high, which proves that this initiative is a valuable opportunity to support young Roma who want to continue their studies," said Ivan Duminica, head of the Interethnic Relations Policy Service of the Ministry of Education.
For high school education, 42 scholarships are offered, for secondary technical education – 7 scholarships, for post-secondary technical education – 24 scholarships, and for higher education – 20 scholarships.
The fellows were selected following a competition organized by the Ministry of Education and Research and the Interethnic Relations Agency. The recipients of merit scholarships study in various fields, such as economics, technology, agriculture, teacher training, journalism, psychology, international relations, and law.
