MEP: We cannot seek money from European citizens for political adventures

The Republic of Moldova will not benefit from financing from the EU if it does not give up replacing the electoral system and does not follow the recommendations of the Venice Commission, Romanian MEP Cristian Preda said in a call-in during the program “Emphasis on today” on TVR Moldova channel, IPN reports.

According to the MEP, any deviation from the Venice Commission’s opinion will make the European institutions take a negative decision as to financing for the Republic of Moldova. ”We are ready to help the Republic of Moldova, but not to support a regime that changes the electoral systems in order to remain in power. In the Republic of Moldova, they do not understand this. We cannot seek money from European citizens for the political adventures in Chisinau,” said Cristian Preda.

He also said that the Moldovans do not need the electoral system change. “I think the citizens of the Republic of Moldova wait for something else, not for electoral systems that would keep someone in power. Withdrawing the bill to introduce the mixed-member electoral system would be a wise decision by the government of Moldova,” stated the MEP.

The Democratic Party’s spokesman Vitalie Gamurari in the same program said officials from Brussels will come to Chisinau to learn about the real situation. “The PDM never said that it will not comply with the recommendations of the Venice Commission. All kinds of electoral systems are used in the EU member states. The Venice Commission’s recommendations speak about the ensuring of democracy and the effects of the mixed-member electoral system. They come to find out the true situation. The truth is somewhere in the middle and the Europeans are trying to collect facts to get at it,” he stated.
