Brussels is very concerned about the political situation in the Republic of Moldova, German MEP David McAllister said in the Konrad Adenauer European Policy Forum “Europe and New Challenges”. The lawmaker noted that Moldova witnessed negative developments over the last few months, IPN reports.
“Your country rapidly needs a new government. This government, regardless of its composition, should tackle the pressing problems faced by the country as an absolute priority, especially in order to fight corruption and organized crime so as to ensure the rule of law,” stated David McAllister.
The European official had meetings with Moldovan political leaders, President Nicolae Timofti and students studying International Relations. He realized that the young people lost confidence in the political elite. “The major task of the new government is to restore the people’s confidence in politicians. This is possible only by strengthening the rule of law,” said the German MEP.
The politician expressed his confidence that the people in Moldova have the power and will needed to solve the political problems. “You are the valuable part of Europe. The EU would be more powerful with such a partner as Moldova. Many representatives of Brussels are ready to help you, but the country must urgently do the necessary reforms,” stated David McAllister.
“The Association Agreement with the European Union opens up new possibilities. Therefore, we must implement the initiated reforms and continue those that are new in the agenda. We need political stability and should continue this very active cooperation with the EU. The accord remains that light at the end of the tunnel through which we should go,” Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Daniela Cujba said in the event.
This was the fourth Konrad Adenauer European Policy Forum. The Konrad Adenauer Stiftung is a German political foundation that campaigns worldwide for peace, freedom and justice through political education and counseling.
